Iron Sharpens Iron: The Power of Discipleship Relationships

Updated: Aug 28, 2023

As Christian, we are called not only to follow Jesus but also to walk alongside and lift one another up. Discipleship relationships play a vital role in forming us, both spiritually and personally. Proverbs 27:17 illustrates this concept, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." Let this verse marinate in your mind as we discuss how we are mutually edified, how we are encouraged and strengthened, and how we learn from each other’s perspectives.

Mutual Edification:

Just as iron sharpens iron, discipleship relationships are built on the principle of mutual edification. When followers of Jesus come together to study the Word, pray, and share their life experiences, they learn from one another and grow together in faith. This process of mutual sharpening leads to spiritual growth, increased knowledge of God's Word, and a deeper understanding of His will for our lives. The sharing of each other’s lives around the Word of God causes growth personally and as a group. Like Ecclesiastes 4:9 says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.”

Encouragement and Accountability:

Discipleship relationships provide an environment for encouragement and accountability. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." In these relationships, we find strength to overcome challenges and celebrate triumphs together. Loving accountability provides valuable feedback into our lives and challenges us to live for Christ.

Learning and Growing from Different Perspectives:

We encounter people from various backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life. Engaging in discipleship relationships allows us to learn from different perspectives as we share our lives with others and enrich our understanding of God's Word. Our different upbringing fosters humility, compassion, and a broader vision of God's kingdom as we see the different ways God has wired us.

Discipleship relationships are a gift given by God to strengthen and equip God’s people. Just as iron sharpens iron, these relationships sharpen and refine us, making us better witnesses of Christ. As we commit ourselves to these life-changing relationships, let us encourage and exhort one another, allowing God to work through us to build a stronger and more vibrant body of believers.
